Only Science: Upcoming Programs

Every Monday at noon, Only Science can be heard on Your Sound Alternative – KRUI 89.7 FM.  Below is a list of upcoming shows.  Be sure to tune in!

Monday, Dec. 15th: Only Science will be airing its 2nd Fiction Special!  Properly entitled The Country Western Science Fiction Holiday Extravaganza, this is simply one show you will not want to miss.

Only Science is a weekly talk radio show hosted by Erik Nylen, a UI graduate student in biomedical engineering.  The program is geared for members of the university community who are interested in hearing about recent issues and discoveries in science not only at Iowa, but across the nation and around the world.  For more information, see the show’s site at thisisonlyscience.blogspot.com.

Astros Broadcaster and UI Alumnus Brett Dolan to Visit UI/KRUI

UI alumnus Brett Dolan, a play-by-play radio announcer and color analyst for the Houston Astros, will visit campus Friday, Nov. 14.

KRUI Sports Director Jordan Loperena will interview Dolan at noon on 89.7 FM.

The public is invited to a question and answer session with Dolan at 2:30 p.m. in Room 101 of Becker Communication Studies Building. Dolan also plans to speak to broadcast journalism and communications classes during his visit.

Dolan, a native of Casey, Iowa, earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the UI in 1992. He worked at KRUI as a student and worked his way up as a broadcaster in the minor leagues before joining the Astros in 2006.

Sponsors of Dolan’s visit are KRUI, and the UI communication studies and sports studies departments, both part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

These United States will be playing at The Mill on Nov, 9th with The XYZ Affair and Wolves in the Attic.  While they are in town, the band will be stopping by KRUI Studios.  Be sure to tune in for this great in-studio!  These United States’ in-studio last year can be heard here.

SultraSonic Takes On Fujiya & Miyagi

THIS Sunday night be sure to turn on and tune in for an Marissa M.’s interview with David Best, lead singer and writer for Fujiya & Miyagi.

The pre-party begins at 10 with the usual electronic and hip hop jams and the interview will air from 11-12.

All questions will be answered THIS Sunday night.

Moving On Up

KRUI will be moving back home to its Iowa Memorial Union studios.  Starting Friday, Nov. 7 some features will be temporarily down.  This will include the KRUI Request Line and web streams.  They will be back up shortly.

Legendary Baseball Broadcaster Visits KRUI and UI

Houston Astros broadcaster Milo Hamilton will visit the UI campus Friday, Nov. 7 for a series of events, including a free, public question-and-answer session at 2:30 p.m. in Room 101, Becker Communication Studies Building.

Earlier that day, listeners can tune into 89.7 FM to hear KRUI Sports Director Jordan Loperena interview Hamilton. The interview begins at noon.

Hamilton, a native of Fairfield, Iowa, graduated from the UI in 1949 and became a highly respected sports broadcaster covering college and professional baseball, basketball, football, golf and boxing.  While with the Atlanta Braves, he was known for calling Hank Aaron’s record-breaking 715th home run in April 1974. Hamilton was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2000.

KRUI is sponsoring his visit with Communication and Sports Studies Departments.

“Freaks of Nature” Author Featured on KRUI

Dr. Mark Blumberg will be discussing his new book “Freaks of Nature: What Anomalies Tell Us About Development and Evolution“, Monday, November 3rd at noon on KRUI’s program Only Science.

Blumberg is a faculty member in the Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience and Developmental Science training programs in the Department of Psychology at the University of Iowa. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the APA journal, Behavioral Neuroscience, a member of the Iowa Center for Developmental and Learning Sciences, and is currently President of the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology.
