Programming Director for The Lab


Students in the Programming Department learn how to operate broadcast equipment, are exposed to the actual constraints of FCC regulation and station policy, and must strive to present themselves in an articulate, professional manner. The Programming Department is split into two sub-departments: KRUI 89.7 FM and The Lab @ KRUI. The Lab is KRUI's second, internet-only station. The Programming Department for The Lab must work closely with News, Sports, Music, and Marketing Departments, and also with the Programming Department for KRUI 89.7 FM.

Duties and Responsibilities

*Make available copies of each for disc jockeys to use in the air studio.

      3. Sportscasts and special programming (such as women's basketball)

      4. Newscasts and special news programming

      5. Music format

      6. Public Service Announcements

      7. All live remotes

      8. Liners

      9. Giveaways

      10. Specialty music shows

      11. Regular rotation disc jockey shifts

    8) Develop The Lab's "on-air" style, with the approval of General Manager and assistance of Production/Community Affairs Director, including:

      1. On-air phraseology

      2. Back-logging format

      3. Weather format

      4. Liner format

      5. Public service announcement format

    9) Submit programming specifics--regular and special--to the Production / Community Affairs Director to have promos, flyers, liners, or giveaways developed.

    10) Assist Music Director in the formulation of The Lab's music format.

    11) Solicit, develop, and schedule special line remotes such as Riverfest, bar remotes, etc.

    12) Ensure that The Lab's rules and regulations are followed by all air, news, sports, public affairs, and promotions staffs.

    13) In conjunction with the Marketing and Production / Community Affairs Directors, work to ensure The Lab's determined image is being carried out on the air.

    14) In times of emergency equipment failure in The Lab -- when attempts to notify the Operations Director fail -- the Programming Director will, upon notification, make every attempt to restore the equipment to working order.

    15) Continually listen to The Lab's disc jockeys and programming to make improvements or changes. In the event that on-air staff is negligent in their duties, inform DJ of disciplinary action to be taken or termination.

    16) Hire necessary staff in accordance with Main Studio Programming Director and see that they are properly trained to ensure Programming Department duties are completed without fail (see also Organizational Structure, Hiring Procedure).

    17) Maintain a list of air-staff candidates for promotion to the Main Studio, and work with the Main Studio Programming Director to establish a procedure for promotion from The Lab to the Main Studio.

    18) Hire and maintain a Programming Staff for conducting evaluation of the Programming Department, in collaboration with the Main Studio Programming Director. Oversee evaluation of Programming Department staff assigned to The Lab in accordance with Evaluation Procedures.

    19) Attend all management meetings.

    20) Perform any other reasonable duties assigned by the General Manager.

    21) The Programming Director for The Lab is required to fulfill 10 hours of office time per week; including five regular office hours.

Supervision is by the General Manager.

Supervision Exercised

The Programming Director for The Lab has co-authority over the staff members of the Programming Department, in collaboration with the Main Studio Programming Director.
