KRUI's Music Department concerns itself
with the development of a consistent music format and ensuring that
all music aired is within the guidelines set by the format. For
KRUI, this means the appropriate selection of alternative music.
Through involvement with the Music Department, students are able to
gain a general overview of the many processes within a radio station.
Students interested in the music industry, public relations, and communications
will benefit from work in the Music Department.
Duties and Responsibilities
1) Develop KRUI music format with help
of General Manager and Program Director.
2) Listen to all new releases received
at KRUI and direct them to a heavy (Red) or light (White) rotation depending
upon current KRUI music format. Albums not suitable for the KRUI
format will be first directed towards specialty music shows, then to
the Marketing Department for giveaway on the air. All albums retained
by KRUI will be label "KRUI," the date received, and an album
identification sticker for filing purposes. New albums will be
added to current rotation at least once every week. No album shall
remain in current rotation longer than forty-five (45) days.
3) Rotate recurrents:
a) Albums leaving rotation must be added to recent recurrents (Orange) within 30 days of leaving rotation. Albums will not remain in recent recurrents for longer than four months.
b) Albums leaving recent recurrents will be added to recurrents (Green) or specialty sections (Electronic, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Local).

4) Compile an accurate weekly Top
Thirty, based on the amount of times an artist has been played according
to KRUI music logs filled out by disc jockeys. With the assistance
of specialty music show hosts, compile weekly specialty charts (RPM,
Hip-Hop, AAA, Jazz, etc.) Submit charts weekly to CMJ.
5) Ensure rotation play logs are printed
and available in the studio for DJs to fill out.
6) Organize and mail a weekly playlist to all on KRUI mailing list including:
a) record companies currently servicing KRUI
b) bands
c) other radio stations
d) general public.
The playlist will include:
a) accurate Top Thirty, compiled in stated manner
b) accurate specialty charts
c) a list of new material in rotation
d) KRUI logo
A copy of the playlist will be given
to the General Manager and the Program Director.
7) Once per day, count records in
current rotation with other music staff, to ensure proper placement
of records and to note any losses. If a loss is discovered, the
General Manager must be notified and action should be taken to retain
the loss.
8) With the Programming Department,
review all music logs to ensure that disc jockeys are following format
guidelines. Discrepancies are brought to the attention of the
Program Director.
9) Assist Marketing Department in securing
albums for giveaways and fundraising.
10) Assist Marketing Department in securing
interviews with bands.
11) Maintain professional relationship
with record companies servicing KRUI. Return calls promptly.
12) Maintain list of promotional companies from which KRUI receives records and/or communicates with. No longer than two (2) weeks may pass without direct phone, email, or instant messenger contact with all companies on the list. Weekly playlist mass emailing does not qualify as direct contact. The list will include:
13) Actively seek relationships with
new record promoters and record companies. Specialty show hosts
will be solicited to identify artists, record labels, and promotions
companies to be contacted for specialty material.
14) Solicit input from air staff
and Program Director to establish and fulfill music needs.
15) Recruit and maintain music staff consisting of volunteers who assist in reviewing new music. Manage email list with weekly emails to music staff outlining new music to be reviewed. Emails will list albums to be reviewed by:
All reviews by music staff will be
completed within 1 week. Music not reviewed before the 1-week
deadline will be returned to the Music Director.
16) Maintain computer database of
music currently in rotation, formerly in rotation, and music rejected
for airplay by reviewers. “Rejected” database should include
a short description of why each album was not added to the KRUI library.
17) Place increased priority on communication
with and review of music from local artists.
18) Maintain stock of review stickers for each album in KRUI library listing:
19) Produce weekly new music radio show
featuring music recently added to rotation.
20) Hire necessary staff and see
that they are properly trained to ensure Music Department duties are
completed without fail (see also Organizational Structure, Hiring Procedure).
21) Evaluate Music Department staff in
accordance with Evaluation Procedures.
22) Attend all management meetings.
23) Perform any other reasonable duties
assigned by the General Manager.
24) The Music Director is required to fulfill 10 hours of office time per week.
Supervision is by the General Manager.
The Music Director has authority over the staff members of the Music Department.
