Students can obtain on-air experience
from the KRUI News Department. In addition, employees may also
develop their journalistic abilities and become familiar with technical
aspects of broadcast production. The atmosphere in which news
personnel work is representative of what they will encounter in a broadcast
journalism career.
Duties and Responsibilities
1) Develop news schedule in consultation with General Manager and Program Director:
a) morning news
b) afternoon news
c)
special news programs, reports, etc.
2) Develop KRUI "news style" for newscasts, including:
a) standard introduction and closing
b) uniform placement of local, national, international stories and feature stories
c) writing and reading style on-air
d)
news sounders.
3) Continually listen to and critique
newscasts in writing.
4) Solicit and coordinate news remotes.
5) Maintain working relationship with
the University of Iowa Office of Public Information, UI Broadcast News
Service, Associated Press, and any other news organizations serving
KRUI.
6) Encourage local reporting. Train
news staff in beat reporting and package production.
7) Establish and maintain control of editorial
integrity of all news programming.
8) Ensure FCC rules and regulations are
followed by news staff members.
9) In conjunction with General Manager
and Program Director, help maintain Public File by contributing a list
of local stories produced by KRUI News staff.
10) Hire necessary staff and see
that they are properly trained to ensure Marketing Department duties
are completed without fail (see also Organizational Structure, Hiring
Procedure).
11) Evaluate News Department staff in
accordance with Evaluation Procedures.
12) Attend all management meetings.
13) Perform any other reasonable duties
assigned by the General Manager.
14) The News Director is required to fulfill 10 hours of office time per week.
Supervision is by the General Manager.
The News Director has authority over the staff members of the News Department.
