The Programming Department has the largest
number of staff members. Management within the department is ultimately
responsible for everything aired on KRUI. Because of this, the
department must work closely with News, Sports, Music, and Marketing
Departments. Students in the Programming Department learn how
to operate broadcast equipment, are exposed to the actual constraints
of FCC regulation and station policy, and must strive to present themselves
in an articulate, professional manner. Working as a KRUI Air-Staff
member is a logical starting point for those interested in a radio broadcasting
career.
Duties and Responsibilities
1) Develop KRUI program log, with
General Manager's approval, outlining everything the station airs daily
and time it is to air.
2) Create and maintain designated
time slots for air staff to fill twenty-four (24) hours daily.
Schedule must be completed by the end of the first week of each academic
semester.
3) Organize and oversee training of
all new air-staff with assistance from Operations Department.
3) Publish copies of air staff schedule for all KRUI directors, General Manager, and air staff. Publish and distribute revised schedules as changes are made within one week of changes. Air staff schedule will include:
a) shift time and day
b) name of disc jockeys
c) current phone numbers of disc jockeys
d)
a list of current substitutes.
4) Within the limits of equipment
capability, ensure continual operation of KRUI twenty-four (24) hours
daily.
6) Continually update KRUI continuity board, including:
a) current promotional spots airing
b) current public service announcements airing
c) current grant announcements airing
d) legalities (EBS test, sign-on/-off, etc.)
e) segues currently airing.
When logging on continuity board,
name of item, length (if applicable), and kill date must be included.
7) Develop and maintain KRUI station logging, including:
a) music logs
b) program logs
c) request logs
Make
available copies of each for disc jockeys to use in the air studio.
8) All on-air programming must be approved by the Program Director before airing, including:
a) promos
b) public affairs programming
c) sportscasts and special programming such as women's basketball
d) newscasts and special news programming
e) music format
f) public service announcements
g) all live remotes
h) liners
i) giveaways
j) specialty music shows
k)
regular rotation disc jockey shifts.
9) Develop KRUI "on-air" style, with the approval of General Manger and assistance of Production / Community Affairs Director, including:
a) on-air phraseology
b) back-logging format
c) weather format
d) liner format
e)
public service announcement format.
10) Submit programming specifics--regular
and special--to the Production / Community Affairs Director to have
promos, flyers, liners, or giveaways developed.
11) Assist Music Director in the formulation
of KRUI music format.
12) Solicit, develop, and schedule special
line remotes such as Riverfest, bar remotes, etc.
13) Ensure that FCC rules and regulations
are followed by all air, news, sports, public affairs, and promotions
staffs.
14) In conjunction with the Marketing
and Production / Community Affairs Directors, work to ensure KRUI's
determined image is being carried out on the air.
15) In times of emergency equipment
failure--when attempts to notify the Operations Director fail--the Program
Director will, upon notification, make every attempt to restore the
equipment to working order.
16) Continually listen to KRUI disc
jockeys and programming to make improvements or changes. In the
event that on-air staff is negligent in their duties, inform DJ of disciplinary
action to be taken or termination.
17) In conjunction with the Operations
Director, ensure that all on-air operators hold an FCC Operators License.
18) Hire necessary staff and see
that they are properly trained to ensure Programming Department duties
are completed without fail (see also Organizational Structure, Hiring
Procedure).
19) Evaluate Programming Department staff
in accordance with Evaluation Procedures.
20) Attend all management meetings.
21) Perform any other reasonable duties
assigned by the General Manager.
22) The Programming Director is required to fulfill 10 hours of office time per week.
Supervision is by the General Manager.
The Programming Director has authority over the staff members of the Programming Department.
