The Sports Department provides listeners
with consistent coverage of sports events with emphasis placed upon
the University of Iowa. This department offers broadcast engineering
experience, on-air announcing, on-air play-by-play, and the development
of journalistic writing skills. Experience gained in this department
would be most beneficial to those interested in a broadcast journalism
career.
Duties and Responsibilities
1) Develop sports programming schedule in consultation with the Program Director and News Director:
a) morning sports casts
b) afternoon sports casts
c) special sports programming
d)
sports remotes.
2) Develop "sports style" including:
a) standard introduction and closing
b) uniform format
c) writing and reading style
d)
consistent sports sounders.
3) Solicit and coordinate sports remotes.
4) Continually listen to and critique
sports casts in writing.
5) Maintain working relationship with
the University of Iowa Office of Sports Information, UI Athletic Department,
and any other individual or organization which provides sports information
or assists the Sports Department.
6) Encourage local reporting.
Train sports staff in lives sports coverage, live reporting, and package
production.
7) Establish and maintain control and
integrity of all sports programming.
8) Ensure all FCC rules and regulations
are followed by Sports staff members.
9) Hire necessary staff and see that
they are properly trained to ensure Sports Department duties are completed
without fail (see also Organizational Structure, Hiring Procedure).
10) Evaluate Sports Department staff
in accordance with Evaluation Procedures.
11) Attend all management meetings.
12) Perform any other reasonable duties
assigned by the General Manager.
13) The Sports Director is required to fulfill 10 hours of office time per week.
Supervision is by the General Manager.
Supervision Exercised
The Sports Director has authority over the staff members of the Sports Department.
