Do you have a voice that wishes to be heard?  Entering its 26th year of operation, KRUI Radio is now hiring staff for Fall 2010.  Available positions include: on-air music DJs, talk/sports show hosts, interviewers, and staff members.  Positions are fun, and serve as a great way of meeting people on campus.  No prior experience necessary.  Apply today!

Public Enemy Panel Discussion

Seminal hip-hop group Public Enemy will be at the Englert Theatre on Thursday, April 1st at 7:00 pm as a part of the University of Iowa’s lecture series in conjunction with the Mission Creek Festival. They will be discussing the creation and impact of their definitive album, “Fear of a Black Planet”.

In addition to the panel discussion, Public Enemy will be stopping by KRUI for an interview on Thursday at 12:30 pm, so be sure to tune in to Your Sound Alternative!

JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound Interview

Determined to become the next big name in Chicago Soul singers, JC Brooks has described soul as “people who do things from the heart.” Add in the force and funk of The Uptown Sound, JC is guaranteed to make you feel the grove of the windy city. Their live shows are known to leave the audience speechless, as JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound are a power punch of everything from punk to R&B. Making crowds get up and dance, JC Brooks is the new sound of Chicago.

JC Brooks and The Uptown Sound will be doing an interview live from KRUI on Saturday, March 6th at 4pm.

Call for Director Applications for the 2010-11 Year

Student Broadcasters Incorporated (SBI) is soliciting applications for all KRUI Director positions for the 2010-11 academic year.  Information on each position can be found HERE.  To apply, please see this PAGE.

The deadline for General Manager applications is Tuesday, March 9th.

The deadline for all other director applications is Sunday, March 21st.

Must be a full-time student (undergrad, graduate/professional) to apply.  Please direct any questions/concerns to SBI President Dave Long at dave-long (at) uiowa (dot) edu.

St. Vincent Ticket Give-Aways

Dan Gable Interview

On Tuesday evening’s edition of From the Cheap Seats, KRUI had a very special in-studio interview with Iowa Wrestling coaching legend Dan Gable.   KRUI Sports Director Jordan Loperena and Kiff Richmann led the interview with help from other members of the KRUI Sports Staff.  Coach Gable gave what was the largest online listening audience in the history of KRUI quite an experience as he revealed the truth to some of his legends and shared some tremendous stories from his wrestling past.  Click on the link below to listen to the archive of the interview!

Christopher the Conquered, a band from Ames, makes energetic and exciting indie folk rock. Full of bombastic drums, amazing horns, and catchy piano parts, “You’re Gonna Glow in the Dark”, their latest record, is one of the best releases to come from Iowa in a long time.

5 Skye Carrasco: “Belly”

Skye Carrasco is an Iowa City native. She has played violin since the age of five and plays frequently around town.

6 Dinosaur Feathers: “Vendela Vida”

Dinosaur Feathers, based out of Brooklyn, plays jumbled up avant-pop music, somewhere in between Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, and The Beach Boys.

Fantastic singer-songwriter.  Festival regular, will be playing at Public Space ONE with Anni Rossi and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone on 4/3.

8 Roommate: “Snowglobe”

Roommate, fronted by a KRUI alum Kent Lambert, is a synth-symph-pop four-piece currently based in Chicago. Their latest record, “We Were Enchanted”, was released in April 2008.

9 The Wheelers: “In Spite of You”

The Wheelers, a band from Cedar Rapids, make fuzzy indie rock in the vein of Pavement and The Pixies. Their latest album, “Milwaukee Black and Tan”, dropped in February 2009.

10 Monadnoc: “House on a Home”

Monadnoc hurls spoken word performances over both desolate and energetic soundscapes. Many Iowa City musicians, such as Skye Carrasco and Oliva Rose Muzzy, contributed to his latest album, “Olive Oil and Indian Blood”.

11 Little Dragon: “Feather”

Little Dragon, a band from Gothenberg, Sweden, makes lush and fun electronic music. Their new album, Machine Dreams, was released in August 2009 to critical acclaim.

12 Xiu Xiu: “Grey Death”

One of the most anticipated shows of the festival.  Xiu Xiu is touring in support of their new album “Dear God, I Hate Myself”, out now on Kill Rock Stars.

13 Brooks Strause: “The Solution”

Brooks Strause is an Iowan musician. He plays guitar, sings, and writes dark folk songs.

14 The Poison Control Center: “Being Gone”

Poison Control Center is a pop-punk band from Ames that gives pop-punk a good name. Fun, but not juvenile. Anthemic, but not simple-minded. Their new album, “Sad Sour Future”, will be released on May 18.

15 Liberty Leg: “The Dude Has Got No Mercy”

Liberty Leg is an Iowa City based blues rock band and have been making music since 1999. Their latest album, “Ginger Lee”, was released on Wrecked ‘Em Wreckords.

16 Joe Jack Talcum: “Photograph”

Joe Jack Talcum has played in a variety of bands during the past three decades, most notably The Dead Milkmen, which he co-founded. He now makes acoustic solo home-recordings and plays in The Low Budgets.

17 Pocahaunted: “Make it Real”

Pocahaunted is a band from Los Angeles comprised of Amanda Brown and Bethany Cosentino. Often referred to as “The Olsen Twins of Drone”, they make psychedelic ambient jams and their latest album, “Make It Real”, was released on March 16th.

So Much Fun is a band from Des Moines. They make indie rock songs with a healthy dose of fun electronica noise.

Caroline Smith & The Goodnight Sleeps, a band based out of Minneapolis, make quirky folk-pop that everyone can enjoy.

20 Coyote Slingshot: “I Should Have Killed You When I Had the Chance”

Coyote Slingshot is the solo project of Porno Galactica’s Dominic Rabalais. Specializing in loud, lo-fi punk songs, he recently released a 7” entitled “First Word of Evil Omens: Vitium” through Super Secret Records.

21 Brighton MA: “Eskimos”

Brighton, MA is a five-piece rock band based out of Chicago. They have recently released a live EP, highlighting a brief residence at famed Schubas.

Dewi Sant is a folk-pop group based out of Minnesota. Mostly somber and confessional, their debut album, “May”, was released this February.

Orange Bowl Rep Visits KRUI

FedEx Orange Bowl Representative Larry Gautier was in Iowa City this past week getting acquainted with Hawkeye Nation. During his time here, he was kind enough to pay a visit to KRUI and give two in-studio interviews this past week with Sports Director Jordan Loperena. The first interview was Wednesday on “From the Cheap Seats” with Jordan and the rest of the “Cheap Seats” crew and the second interview, available for streaming below, was on Friday’s “College Gridiron Preview” with Jordan and the “Gridiron Preview” crew.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are slated to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in this year’s FedEx Orange Bowl at Land Shark Stadium in Miami, FL on January 5, 2010.
