The Black Keys, consisting of vocalist and guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, possess a magical blend of traditional blues and psychedelic sound that creates concise soulful rock.

They released their first album, The Big Come Up, in 2002, followed by Thickfreakness in 2003, Rubber Factory in 2004, and Magic Potion in 2006. With each of The Black Keys’ album releases, the group achieved increasing critical acclaim and commercial recognition. The song “Set You Free” was included on the soundtrack of the 2003 movie School of Rock, “The Desperate Man’” was used in a 2006 Victoria’s Secret commercial featuring Heidi Klum, and “Your Touch” was featured in an episode of HBO’s ‘Entourage’. Time Magazine also named them one of the 10 Best Acts of 2003.

The band’s latest album, Attack and Release, was released in April of 2008 and was produced by Danger Mouse, who has worked notable artists such as The Gorillaz and Gnarls Barkley. Attack and Release debuted at number 14 on the Billboard Top 200, and includes the hits “Strange Times” and “Psychotic Girl”. In addition, the Black Keys were featured on the 2009 album Blakroc, a hybrid rock and hip-hop album featuring contributions from artists such as Jim Jones, Mos Def, and Ludacris.

Tickets for this show go on sale at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, February 24th and can be purchased at University of Iowa Box Office, located in the IMU, and all other Ticketmaster locations. Tickets are $26 for University of Iowa Students and $30 for the general public.

Seminal hip-hop group Public Enemy will be at the Englert Theatre on Thursday, April 1st at 7:00 pm as a part of the University of Iowa’s lecture series in conjunction with the Mission Creek Festival. They will be discussing the creation and impact of their definitive album, “Fear of a Black Planet”.

In addition to the panel discussion, Public Enemy will be stopping by KRUI for an interview on Thursday at 12:30 pm, so be sure to tune in to Your Sound Alternative!

FedEx Orange Bowl Representative Larry Gautier was in Iowa City this past week getting acquainted with Hawkeye Nation. During his time here, he was kind enough to pay a visit to KRUI and give two in-studio interviews this past week with Sports Director Jordan Loperena. The first interview was Wednesday on “From the Cheap Seats” with Jordan and the rest of the “Cheap Seats” crew and the second interview, available for streaming below, was on Friday’s “College Gridiron Preview” with Jordan and the “Gridiron Preview” crew.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are slated to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in this year’s FedEx Orange Bowl at Land Shark Stadium in Miami, FL on January 5, 2010.

Environmental issues, human rights, international issues. At the Moment has it all.

Sharon Benzoni graduated December 2007 as an environmental science major. She co-hosted a science show, and then was offered her own at KRUI. And she dived right in.

“My idea for At the Moment came about when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to focus on,” Benzoni said, adding she wanted to get into a little bit of everything going on “at the moment.”

Hence came the name.

KRUI has aired three episodes of Benzoni’s At the Moment thus far, starting with an interview June 14 with Sunday Goshit, a native of Nigeria, about Nigerian e-mail scammers. The following week she had an interview with Fatemah Keshavarz, an Iranian writer, about the recent tumultuous election in Iran. And most recently had an interview with an expert of climate change.

Upcoming interviews include one with a renewable energy officer from Samoa, whose name she wished to withhold for now, an interview with Professor Burns Weston, the founder of the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, and she is in the planning process of a discussion about the Iraq education initiative.

“I want to let Iowa City and the university community know about some amazing work going on here,” Benzoni said.

She added, “I love the radio as a medium. Weaving human stories and intellectual ideas together with the exploration of interesting concepts” is really engaging.

The Cool Kids will be playing a FREE concert for KRUI’s 25th Anniversary Party at the Iowa Memorial Union on Saturday, April 4th. The Chicago-based, retro-rap duo consists of Antoine “Mikey Rocks” Reed and Evan “Chuck Inglish” Ingersol.  Rolling Stone named The Cool Kids as one of their ten artists to watch in 2008 and they have since gone from an underground sensation to opening for M.I.A. on tour and having their song, “Mikey Rocks,” featured on the hit comedy Entourage. With their retro-electro beats and influences of 1980’s and 1990’s rap, The Cool Kids have earned the title of “the black Beastie Boys.”

This show is presented in conjunction with the University of Iowa Museum of Art, with production by SCOPE Productions.  Additional support is provided by The Late Night at Iowa Program and the University of Iowa Student Government.  The concert is a part of the Mission Creek Music Festival.

March 28th is KRUI’s 25th anniversary!  Yes, 25 YEARS of providing Iowa City a Sound Alternative for Music, News, and Sports.  The whole staff is excited about the milestone and feel a celebration is in order.

KRUI is teaming with a bunch of organizations to provide some cool events!  Events include alumni guest DJs, a movie at The Bijou Theater, and concert on Saturday night.  Below you find a full schedule.

KRUI will host a student media, on-air forum with biologist Dr. E.O. Wilson Wednesday, February 11th at noon.  Dr. Wilson, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, will deliver a lecture at the Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm.  The forum can be streamed online at www.kruiradio.org/listen.  For more information on Wilson’s lecture, see the University of Iowa Lecture Committee website at lectures.uiowa.edu.

Thursday, December 18, 2008 :: 4 PM – Haley Bonar MYSPACE

Haley Bonar, a St. Paul, MN. based singer-songwriter, will be playing with Pieta Brown at The Mill Thursday, 12/18.

Marble Sky is Jeff Witscher (Secret Abuse, Trash Dog, Deep Jew, Impregnable, etc.).  Past recordings find Jeff conjuring devastatingly beautiful tidepools of romantic, nostalgic drone music. He’ll be playing brand new material live in the studio on Tuesday, December 16 at 7PM on Invisible Time Lines w/Ian MacMillan.  After his set, Jeff will be playing a few tracks from his favorite ambient and drone artists.

KRUI Sports Director Jordan Loperena will interview Coach Brands on College Gridiron Weekly Preview.  The conversation will focus on the current wrestling season; including the December 11th Iowa-Northern Iowa match-up.  Brands, a 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist, is in his third year as head coach.  He was named the 2008 NWCA Big Ten Coach of the Year.  UI alums, and current Houston Astro broadcasters, Milo Hamilton and Brett Dolan have been recent guests on KRUI.

Monday, Dec. 15th: Only Science will be airing its 2nd Fiction Special!  Properly entitled The Country Western Science Fiction Holiday Extravaganza, this is simply one show you will not want to miss.

Only Science is a weekly talk radio show hosted by Erik Nylen, a UI graduate student in biomedical engineering.  The program is geared for members of the university community who are interested in hearing about recent issues and discoveries in science not only at Iowa, but across the nation and around the world.  For more information, see the show’s site at thisisonlyscience.blogspot.com.

KRUI Sports Director Jordan Loperena will interview Dolan at noon on 89.7 FM.

The public is invited to a question and answer session with Dolan at 2:30 p.m. in Room 101 of Becker Communication Studies Building. Dolan also plans to speak to broadcast journalism and communications classes during his visit.

Dolan, a native of Casey, Iowa, earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the UI in 1992. He worked at KRUI as a student and worked his way up as a broadcaster in the minor leagues before joining the Astros in 2006.

Sponsors of Dolan’s visit are KRUI, and the UI communication studies and sports studies departments, both part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Earlier that day, listeners can tune into 89.7 FM to hear KRUI Sports Director Jordan Loperena interview Hamilton. The interview begins at noon.

Hamilton, a native of Fairfield, Iowa, graduated from the UI in 1949 and became a highly respected sports broadcaster covering college and professional baseball, basketball, football, golf and boxing.  While with the Atlanta Braves, he was known for calling Hank Aaron’s record-breaking 715th home run in April 1974. Hamilton was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2000.

KRUI is sponsoring his visit with Communication and Sports Studies Departments.
